Archive for Sherlock Holmes

It had been recently reported that Mark Strong was cast in Sherlock Holmes but his part was unknown. It has since been rumored that his role will be Blackwood.

Guy Ritchie had also mentioned that Russell Crowe will not be cast as Dr. Watson, but did not deny that Crowe would not be in the film.

From Latino Review:

According to my Intel, “there is a VERY good chance that Russell Crowe is going to play Professor Moriarty.”

Professor James Moriarty is a fictional character who is the best-known antagonist (and nemesis) of the detective Sherlock Holmes. Widely considered to be the first true example of a super villain, Moriarty is a criminal mastermind, described by Holmes as the “Napoleon of Crime” (T. S. Eliot would later use the same phrase, in homage, to describe Macavity in Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats). Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, lifted the phrase from a real Scotland Yard inspector who was referring to Adam Worth, a true-life (though non-violent) model for Moriarty.

So who is going to play WATSON?

Nobody has been cast yet.  The Watson role was offered to Gerard Butler but he passed.

Guy Ritchie has confirmed that he has cast Mark Strong in his reinvention of “Sherlock Holmes” which will be inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels and Lionel Wigram’s comic book series. The film which is due in 2010 stars Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes.

Ritchie confirmed that he will put Strong against Robert Downey Jr. in the film, but did not give out a specific character. Many are speculating that Strong will be cast as Professor James Moriarty as that is Sherlock Holmes’ widely-known nemesis.
