Archive for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Earlier Kevin Eastman had mentioned in an interview of the possibility of a recreation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, only in the live-action sense. Then Steve Murphy, a writer for the 5th Turtle, called Eastman’s rumor “complete nonsense”. Now, co-creator Peter Laird has been interviewed and is confirming the possibility of a live-action/CGI hybrid TMNT film.

MTV: Why another live-action TMNT film, and why now?

PL: As it stands now, there is no intention of doing another live-action film like the first three, with actors and stuntmen in actual Turtle suits, contrary to what was said by Kevin. We have pretty much decided that the next “TMNT” movie should be what we’ve been calling a “hybrid” — that is to say, live-action humans and sets combined with very realistic CGI Turtles (and possibly some other CGI characters).

Laird also mentions that he would consider using Chris Evans and Sarah Michelle Gellar for the characters of Casey and April in the live-action film. Evans and Gellar actually played those characters in the CGI version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Well, we got our hopes up for nothing folks. The rumors of there being another run at a live-action version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were false.

According to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles writer Stephen Murphy’s blog the 5th turtle, the claims made by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman at his Heavy Metal forum that a live-action movie was in the works are “complete nonsense and entirely untrue.” (Eastman reportedly sold his interests in TMNT years ago and is no longer involved with it.)

Murphy had several months earlier quashed a statement initially posted at the official site of TMNT license holder Playmates Toys claiming that a live-action movie was in the works. Playmates later revised their statement and removed the “live-action” part. Murphy “can wholeheartedly confirm” that there will indeed be a sequel to TMNT, “although it’s more likely to be early 2011″ rather than 2010 as stated by Playmates.

Furthermore, Imagi Studios, the outfit behind last year’s TMNT, may or may not be involved with the sequel. The 5th turtle posted this official statement a few months ago: “Imagi’s unilateral option to produce and distribute a sequel to the 2007 TMNT CG-animated movie expired on April 30, 2008. As a result, while Mirage continues to speak with Imagi, Mirage has begun discussions with several other movie companies regarding the production of a new TMNT film for distribution sometime in the not-too-distant future.”

Could it actually be? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of the 90’s that taught a generation of kids that it was cool to eat pizza, swing nunchuks, and say “cowabunga!” are coming back to the big screen? Director Kevin Eastman confirmed the good news in an interview recently:

Yes, it is true. Although the CGI film did well enough to warrent a sequel, there has been much talk between Imagi and Warners to do a better ‘re-invention’ (newest Hollywood buzzword) of the TMNT’s, in a live action film–like what was done with Batman. Back to basics, back to the origin and the intro of the Shredder, etc…there have been talks, trips to Northampton to talk to Mr Laird, and discussions with the original “first” TMNT film director Steve Barron to come back and do it right–but no official word yet…will keep you posted.”

You have to wonder if they are going to go the route of the latest animated TMNT and make the film darker than the originals.  They at least owe it to the fans to get a Vanilla Ice performance somewhere in the film.
